AICTE’s Circular: Lateral Entry In Different Engineering Disciplines For B.Tech/B.E. Graduates

As per the new circular of the All India Council for Technical Education, all the students who have B.Tech/B.E. degrees in a particular discipline can apply for lateral entry in the B.Tech/B.E. for any other  discipline.

Candidates who are looking for lateral entries after their one B.Tech/B.E degree can apply for admission in B.Tech/B.E. degree in a different discipline and the duration will not be 4 years. It has been mentioned clearly in the AICTE circular that the candidates may complete the second B.Tech/BE degree in less than 4 years or two or three years. “without compromising on the credit requirements in core discipline and attainment of learning outcomes of the new programme”, mentioned in the circular.

Hence, candidates who are willing to pursue B.Tech from IGNOU in a discipline different from their first B.tech degree can take admission through lateral entry. They do not need to take admission in the first year if they already possess a B.tech/B.E. degree irrespective of their discipline.

This decision of AICTE has surprised many colleges and this decision was taken at the council’s meeting in July. Now colleges have been guided to inform students appropriately regarding the requirements of the second discipline and the universities have also been advised to make necessary provisions in their statutes.

“I do not think it will have its shine. It will create a lot of confusion among students,” said RM Kishore who is the vice-chairman of the RMK group of institutions.

“Instead of allowing two engineering degrees at UG level which may lead to artificially hyped demand, either the existing UG degrees must be more interdisciplinary or comprehensive PG degrees like Systems Analysis and Design, Project Management, should be encouraged,” criticism of S. Vaidhyasubramanian, vice-chancellor of SASTRA.

AICTE has explained that this decision was taken after considering the queries of students related to pursuing UG degrees in engineering in different disciplines.

The AICTE council chairman Anil D. Sahasrabudhe said, “There was a demand of students who wanted to pursue a degree in another discipline but universities were turning down stating there is no such provision.”

The chairman clearly said there will be fewer students who will go for such additional degrees and if a student is willing to pursue Electrical or Computer Science Engineering after Mechanical Engineering can do so with the help of Lateral Entry.

“There are Mechanical Engineering graduates who may be interested in Electrical or Computer Science and Engineering. Metallurgy graduates may be interested in Mechanical Engineering. But why turn them away,” Anil D. Sahasrabudhe.

This circular has made B.Tech/B.E. graduates are eligible to apply for any other UG degree in engineering in different disciplines via lateral entry. All the engineering courses of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) are also in accordance with this AICTE circular. Learn about- Ignou B Tech Admission 2021.
